Chino Hills High School (Chino Hills, CA) senior basketball player Melanie Henderson had a stellar year on the basketball court. She served as captain to the team, which went on to win their league championship. With graduation just around the corner and her senior year coming to an end, she had just one problem …. no date for her senior prom!
Without Melanie’s knowledge, her mother Marion decided to write in to STEVE HARVEY to see if he could help Melanie find a date for the prom, which is being held this Saturday, May 17, in Long Beach, CA.
To Marion’s surprise, producers from STEVE HARVEY called her immediately and let her know that they were up for the challenge. When Marion told Melanie the news, she wasn’t exactly sure how she would respond. Luckily, Melanie thought it was a great idea and agreed to travel to Chicago with her mother to see what kind of prom date Steve Harvey would find for her.
Knowing that Melanie is a basketball player and very tall (5’ 10”), Harvey hand-picked a very special date for her – Jahlil Okafor, a senior standout basketball player at Whitney Young in Chicago who will play at Duke University next season.
Melanie was actually familiar with the Duke-bound center and had seen him play basketball in-person before. She was very surprised and happy with Steve Harvey’s selection for a prom date. Jahlil will travel to California this weekend to attend Melanie’s senior prom with her.
In addition to a prom date, Steve Harvey also set Melanie up with a prom dress and shoes, a session with celebrity hair stylist Kim Kimble at Kimble Hair Studio, professional makeup and nails, dinner and transportation to the prom!
Tune-in to STEVE HARVEY, Friday, June 6 at 5 PM on FOX 50 to see how Melanie’s prom date with Jahlil Okafor came about!
