Recently there has been an extension of a law called "the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act" or VAWA.

This law permits the victim of domestic violence to self-sponsor for a green card if they are a spouse or child of a US citizen or permanent resident.

This also includes the U visa - for those who are not married to a USC or permanent resident - but are victims of domestic violence or other violent crimes

They can obtain a visa and work permit. This can later lead to a green card

Let us look at the "Deferred Action" program for Childhood Arrivals, also called "DACA", that started in June of last year. This program permits young people who entered as young children & were educated in our schools, to obtain temporary legal presence from the federal government.

So far, almost 408,000 people have applied and about 154,000 have been approved .

NC is among the top 10 states of DACA applicants

The top 3 countries of origin for DACA applicants are

             Mexico, El Salvador & Honduras.

Those who receive deferred action will receive an employment card and social security number.

NC will start issuing specially marked drivers licenses to DACA beneficiaries on March 25th

I hope that you have enjoyed it and I will see you in my next update of Immigration News for North Carolina.

Congressional leaders still have not presented a comprehensive immigration reform bill this will happen within the next few months.
