Join Historic Oakwood Cemetery’s Executive Director, Robin Simonton, for a lively talk about some of the permanent residents at this 143 year old site. Officially incorporated in 1869, Historic Oakwood Cemetery began the re-interment process of Confederate dead in 1867, but is the final resting place of North Carolina citizens that date as far back as the 1700s with available burial space for the next 200 years.

If you’ve ever wandered through an old cemetery, examining the stones and wondering about the meaning of their symbols, don’t miss this interactive and informative session. We’ll discuss what the stories behind those symbols are and talk about burial customs in America from our early days to today.

Robin Simonton has been the Executive Director of Historic Oakwood Cemetery since November of 2011. She holds a BA in US History from the University of Hawai`i and an MA in Historical Administration from Eastern Illinois University. Robin served as the researcher of the book Oahu Cemetery: Burial Ground & Historic Site, written by Nanette Napoleon in 1997 and currently is the online editor of The Graveyard Rabbit Online Journal.
