Ovarian Cancer Walk & 5K run
Saturday, September 8, 2012
Sanderson High School
Saturday, September 8, 2012 (Raleigh, NC)—The 10th annual Gail Parkins Memorial Ovarian Cancer Walk & 5K Run will take place at Sanderson High School. All registrations open at 7:00AM with refreshments provided by Dunkin Donuts. The competitive 5K run will start at 8:00AM and the 2-mile walk will start at 10:30AM. It is a fun event for the entire family! This year’s event will have a wonderful marketplace to shop with many different vendors and a great silent auction with over 100 items to bid on.
We are very excited to have 2 time Olympic Champion and Ovarian Cancer survivor Shannon Miller attend the walk this year. Shannon is the most decorated American gymnast in history. She will be speaking at a luncheon on Friday September 7, 2012 at the Umstead Hotel in Cary and also giving a gymnastics clinic at Gymcarolina Gymnastics Academy later that same afternoon both events benefiting the Duke Ovarian Cancer Research Programs.
We are proud and honored to have the 2012 Miss NC, USA and Miss Teen NC, USA who will be available for taking pictures and for signing autograph pictures.
The 5k run was added in 2009 with great success as the run goes through the popular Shelley Lake area greenways. The childrens area is always expanding with face painting, inflatables and a special area set up by The Little Gym of Raleigh. Our DJ plays fun and lively music for all ages and the celebration of the ovarian cancer survivors is always a highlight.
Over 13,000 people have participated in this event over the past 9 years and close to 3 million dollars has been raised all of which goes to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund at Duke University Medical Center. Each year, over 100 survivors come out to be celebrated and recognized. This is the only ovarian cancer specific event in the triangle and the only ovarian cancer walk in all of North Carolina.
For your $30 registration fee you receive a t-shirt and lunch. Morning refreshments provided by Dunkin Donuts and lunch is provided after the walk by Amante’s pizza, Firebirds of North Hills, and Chick Fil A. The grand finale is when a check is given to the Duke Gyn Oncology Physicians from Duke.
