The inaugural Race Against Pulmonary Hypertension 5K Walk and Run will be held rain or shine on Saturday, June 25 to raise money for the Pulmonary Hypertension Association support groups across the Carolinas. The race will begin at 7:30 a.m. at the RTP Foundation Headquarters at 12 Davis Drive in Research Triangle Park, N.C. The event will also feature a six-minute walk to represent the clinical six minute walk distance(6MWD) which is used to evaluate exercise capacity in patients with pulmonary hypertension.Return to event list.
Pulmonary Hypertension (PH) is abnormally high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs. It makes the right side of the heart need to work harder than normal. It takes most patients an average of two years from when symptoms appear to be accurately diagnosed with PH. This complex condition is frequently misdiagnosed and by that time the disease has often progressed to a more serious stage. With early intervention and proper treatment, patients can live longer with PH without it impacting their daily lives so dramatically.
“With seven support groups, major pulmonary hypertension medical centers at Duke and UNC and innovative pharmaceutical research all active in North Carolina, the Pulmonary Hypertension Association appreciates the awareness and funding support that the Race Against PH: North Carolina 5K Walk/Run will bring for people living with this disease,” said Rino Aldrighetti, President of the Pulmonary Hypertension Association. “One hundred percent of the money raised through these efforts will be used to move us closer to a cure for pulmonary hypertension, as well as provide support for patient and caregiver programs.”
The fee to register for the timed 5K run or walk or a six-minute walk is $25. The intent of the six minute walk is to offer an option for those who wish to come out and support the cause but do not wish to run/walk the 5K. The six-minute walk is also an option for those who want to register
and show their support to the PHA support groups of the Carolinas but are unable to actually attend the race. Online registration and donation ends June 22, but to be guaranteed a race t shirt please sign-up by June 12, 2011. An awards ceremony will be held at the close of the
event. For more information about the Race Against Pulmonary Hypertension visit us on Facebook or the event website.
